In keeping with the great tradition of English Cathedral music there has been a choir at Durham for over six hundred years. This almost unbroken tradition of praising God in music continues to the present day. Evensong is sung in the cathedral every day of the week except Monday, and there are three choral services each Sunday.

NEW PIANO FOR THE CATHEDRAL

On Wednesday 23 November (we missed St Cecilia’s day by 24 hours) a new piano was delivered to Durham Cathedral. This was purchased via DCCA with a gift from two DCCA members who read about our projected ‘Piano Appeal’ in the recent newsletter. The new piano is a Boston 215, supplied by the Tyneside Piano Company, and had its first public outing in the star-studded Carols of Light concert on Thursday 8 December. Much of the proceeds from this concert has gone to the Cathedral musicians’ Outreach programme.

The old piano, a 130-year-old Bechstein, we hope will be sold by the Tyneside Piano Company as an antique.

The DCCA is a registered charity.  Our purpose is to support the provision of Sacred Choral Music provided by the organists, by Durham Cathedral Choir, and by Durham Cathedral Consort of Singers, at Durham Cathedral or elsewhere, thus helping to ensure that its tradition is maintained and developed as part of the Cathedral’s worship and heritage.
